I think part of the public discomfort (and therefore media attention) with these work cultures comes from treating tech culture as a predictor of how all white-collar work will evolve. There is some truth to that concern but misses some nuance. With frontier technologies like blockchains and AI so much of the success is front loaded because it is a very competitive landscape right now. Speed compounds early and that often means long hours and weekend work during the most intense phases.
That does not mean this is where the rest of the world is headed or even where the rest of tech is headed. Every iconic company started with founders working nights and weekends in lofts and garages. Today the projects are even more ambitious and much better capitalized, so the push for speed and aggressive execution is happening at scale across entire teams. That is a very specific type of culture and per Tiago it is not for everyone.
Other founders will take very different approaches. Some will optimize for pacing, sustainability, and a clear cycle of sprinting and resting because that is what fits their product and their people. There is a real alchemy to this. What works in one context for one mission or one stage will not necessarily work in another.
Today a reporter at Business Insider published an investigative story about our company and values as we build @worldcoin.
It claims that we believe what matters as a company is accomplishing our mission, that we have no place for politics, that we use AI tools to get more done, and that we work very hard, even on weekends.
These allegations are absolutely correct.
We think our mission to build the tools humans need to thrive in the age of AI could not be more important, and we are proud of the values we live by to make it possible. Here is the full list which you can also find on every tv in our office and on our website:
We understand this is not for everyone, but if you’re excited about this way of working and our mission, we’re hiring across Hardware and Software Engineering, Design, Product and much more in San Francisco and Munich - we especially love working with former founders.
